Titanic Events
A Titanic Year
Titanic. The word is familiar to almost everyone. The Titanic disaster impacted the world over, almost every country in the world lost citizens in history’s most infamous sinking.
Lancashire has far more links with the Titanic disaster than anyone might suppose.70 people from the county were either onboard the doomed White Star Liner or were very closely involved. People like the world famous band leader Wallace Hartley, from Colne who kept the band playing as the ship sank. He was returned home a hero to Colne and interred at the town cemetery. Later a bust was erected, and the town will honour him again in 2012……100 years after the sinking when a new memorial will be dedicated in the newly opened Titanic In Lancashire Museum in Colne. There are many other events, including not ONE but THREE World Premieres commemorating our special titanic connections! For a free downlodable programme of all the Titanic events click here.
Other Lancashire connections include the Captain of the ship which rescued Titanic’s survivors, Arthur Rostron, who was born and bred in Astley Bridge. The gold braid used on the uniforms of officers of the White Star Line was made in Preston. One not so lucky in achieving public acclaim was Stanley Lord, from Bolton. He was captain of the Californian, a vessel wrongly accused of being nearby the Titanic.
