For four days in September visitors to Pendle will have the chance to watch weaving looms from the 1900s in action, walk in the footsteps of the Pendle witches and learn more about lead mining in Earby. Plus much more - and all for free!
From 10 to 13 September Pendle is taking part in the national event Heritage Open Days. Organised by English Heritage, this is the biggest free celebration of England's architecture, history and culture.
Councillor Allan Buck, who represents tourism in Pendle, said :
"Pendle is a great place for visitors who love heritage - we have so much here!
"Heritage Open Days is a great way for Pendle to showcase lots of different aspects of that marvellous heritage, including the UK's longest canal, one of the country's most unique mining museums and the great steaming day at Bancroft Mill.
"And of course, no trip to Pendle would be complete without a tour of the sites associated with Britain's most famous witches on the Pendle Witches Trail."
Events in Pendle also include :
- A tour of The Oaks Hotel in Reedley on Thursday 10 September - look out for the resident ghost
- A 2 mile guided walk from Colne library, looking at the history of the Carry Bridge hamlet and the surrounding areas on Friday 11 September
- A walk through Colne with television presenter Simon Entwistle to learn about the town's heroes and villains on Saturday 12 September
- The annual Pendle Canal Festival at Reedley Marina on Saturday 12 September
- A talk from local historian Geoff Crambie about the history of the area from Colne to the Nelson boundary on Sunday 13 September
Mike Williams, Pendle Council's Tourism Officer, said :
"It's great that Pendle is once again celebrating its fantastic heritage at this national event.
"Working with neighbouring Burnley allows us to show off a great deal more and to increase the size and impact of the event.
"Both Pendle and Burnley have so much to excite visitors looking for the best heritage experience.
"We are also part of the much wider 'Heritage Revealed' regional campaign run by Lancashire & Blackpool Tourist Board, so the spotlight will truly be on this part of the country's heritage."
Anyone making the trip to Pendle for the Heritage Open Days will find a good range of accommodation. We've got everything, from friendly B&Bs to homely self-catering cottages, from the former grand house of a tea merchant, now a fine hotel, to a pretty village Youth Hostel. All in all, those that venture to this part of Lancashire will find much to surprise and delight them.
