Rings of Time
On the original Pendle Sculpture Trail at Barley the Lead Artist, Philippe Handford, has designed artwork called “The Rings of Time”. Look up into the trees…….what dates can you see? The answers are:
1324 - Barley 'Barlegh' appears
1507 - Pendle Forest deforested by Henry V11
1612 - Local 'witches' taken to Lancaster Castle
1652 - George Fox
1661 - Richard Towneley's barometric readings on Pendle Hill
1750 - first Inghamite church in Fence
1894 - Black Moss reservoir built
1912 - Clarion House built
1918 - war memorial in Barley
1935 - Aitken Wood planted
1938 - Whitehough established
1945 - end of WW2 and losses from Barley
1987 - The Pendleway created
2012 - Sculpture trail started
2018 - second phase of the trail
There are 16 discs with dates and one with the symbol for 'Time'
One of the blank discs is for when time began and an empty ring for infinity.
A further blank disc denotes the future.
