An illustrated talk by Brian Jeffery and Richard Matthews

The starting point for this talk is to describe the road system before 1790, including the Kings Highway from Lancaster to Manchester and Whalley Abbey. Using Read and Simonstone as examples we examine the effect the Industrial Revolution had on the area, and the coming of the turnpikes which helped create so much of the network we know today.
