About
Colne Dramatic Society are delighted to announce that bookings are now open for their May production of Be My Baby by Amanda Whittington, directed by Eleanor Jolley.
This highly anticipated production takes place over two months in 1964, in St Saviour’s, a Church of England run mother and baby home in the North of England. The home takes in unmarried mothers during their pregnancy, and accommodates them until their child is born … the child is then immediately given up for adoption.
Despite the apparent predetermined future of all the protagonists, this play is not a record of lost hope, merely a comment on one of the unspoken realities of the ‘Swinging Sixties’. A realisation that life did indeed play on, and that the players had no real say in the outcome. And all this unravelled in a culture orchestrated by the music of the age. Whether you are watching, playing, or part of the team, this play has the capability of making you laugh, cry, or just simply think.
The all-female cast, comprises six strong characters, played in the CDS production by Emily Williamson, Cathryn Osborne, Brogan Riley, Fiona McInerney, Susan Mullen and Charis Deighton.
And featuring among the laughter and the tears of this wonderful piece of writing, is some of the most recognisable and memorable music of the early sixties. If you enjoy good music as well as good drama, you will fall in love with the story of these young girls and their predicament. And audiences will be encouraged to sing along to classic songs like Chapel of Love by the Dixie Cups, Past Present & Future by The Shangrilas and So Young by The Ronettes - not forgetting of course the wonderful title song, also by The Ronettes.
Be My Baby will be presented at The Little Theatre, River Street, Colne from Monday 1st to Saturday 6th May at 7.30 nightly. Tickets cost £7.00 for Monday and Tuesday and £7.50 Wednesday to Saturday, and can be booked by telephone via the theatre answerphone (01282 861424). Alternatively you can book in person at the bookings desk at Colne Library on Saturday 29th April from 11am to 1pm. But be sure to book early - as advance enquiries are coming in thick and fast!
