Reasons to visit Pendle

Why should I visit Pendle? Here’s just a couple of reasons……

1 Enjoy some of the country’s best walking in beautiful countryside. Walk the Pendle Way, the Pendle Witches Trail or climb the mighty Pendle Hill, Lancashire’s iconic natural landmark and part of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The hill was first made famous by George Fox’s climb in 1652, its one of “Pendle’s Three Peaks”.

2 Enjoy some of Lancashire’s finest cycle routes. From family cycle routes to the Grand Tour of Pendle, guided rides, and major cycle events, Pendle has the lot, from the easy to the challenging.

3 Breathe in the past and take in some of the greatest heritage sites in the North. Travel back in History in Pendle by visiting one of Lancashire’s last working mill steam engines at Bancroft Mill on a Steaming Day, or stroll or cycle on the scenic Leeds & Liverpool Canal . The canal and Bancroft Mill have recently featured on a Channel 5 celebrity canal programme. Bancroft Mill will have its centenary this year. There are also a good number of town trails which take in the marvellous history of the area.

4 Witch Way do I go? Known worldwide for our amazing story of the Pendle Witches come and explore the area steeped in heritage. There’s an exhibition on the witches at the Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford and there’s lots of witches trails to do, including the Pendle Sculpture Trail, where you can find out “which witch is which?” There are also new sculptures at Letcliffe Park, Barnoldswick, based on the witches.

5 Food Glorious Food Pendle is one of the best places to indulge yourself in Lancashire. In Pendle you can experience many different cuisines, from Asian specialities in Nelson, to the continental in Colne and Barrowford. We also have restaurants in idyllic rural settings, like the award-winning Fence Gate Inn and the Michelin-starred White Swan with its rave reviews. The area is also proud of its local products, like world-beating Farmhouse biscuits and nearby Moorhouses Brewery, brewers since 1865 with beers such as Black Cat and Pendle Witches Brew.

6 We are famously inspirational The view from the top of Pendle Hill so inspired George Fox that he had an epiphany on our famous summit that lead him to set up a worldwide religious movement, The Quakers. The Pendle countryside and our history has also inspired many others, like artist Keith Waterhouse and the famous Bronte Sisters. There is a Bronte walk through Wycoller Country Park. For an area which is quite small we have many other Famous Folk who came from here.
